South American Summer part 2 - on the Bus - Peru Hop

Image
After 2 amazing meals, a chance to have Starbucks and sleep in. We embarked on the exploration part of our summer. We got up early and gathered our backpacks to meet our Peru Hop bus.

The premise of the Peru Hop tour company reminds me a lot of a cruise ship. The bus has a tour guide and a bathroom (number 1 only). The bus follows a pre determined route and has stops on the way. At each major stop they have relationships with hotels and the traveller can elect to stay the night or multiple and then pick up the bus to continue their journey. You can prebook tours and hotels on their website or you can pay in cash on the bus for excursions and get their help booking rooms at hotels.

We elected to wing it and have the Peru Hop guides book our hotels. There was only one time in the entire trip where we weren't able to get a room at the hotel we wanted. But they were helpful in finding us a room at a like hotel. We traveled with the bus from  June 15-June 22.

South American Summer part 1 fine dining in Peru

Image
This summer was filled with travel. My friend Greta invited me to join her on her 3 country 4 week trip. We started the day school got out. We left that night for Lima Peru. We stayed in a cute 1 bedroom airbnb Our purpose in Lima was to eat. Not sight see. We started on our arrival with ceviche and pisco sours.

The next day we had 2 spectacular meals. We started with lunch at Maido. We made reservations more than a month in advance to make sure we could eat here. Maido is one of the 50 best restaurant in Latin America from 2017 and one of the 50 world's best restaurants of 2019.  We had the full tasting menu and wine parings. The food was playful and tasty. The wine parings were botique wines and all were chosen for how they would go with the food. The wait staff was fun and very interested in discussing our experience and reactions to the food.

We did an astronomy tour. The sky was unreal. We say Saturn and its rings, Jupiter and 4 moons, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, a nebula, satellites, and shooting stars. We also took a prom picture with long exposure and light painting. #leighec #stars #nightsky #newmoon #travel #chile #valleelqui

Montevideo, Uruguay (almost a year later)

Image
Last February I went to Montevideo, Uruguay. We had a 5 day break and we found an inexpensive flight.

This trip started at the end of my chaperone duties. I had just spent 12 days in Europe chaperoning our school MUN trip to Amsterdam, the Hague, and Pairs. We arrived into Quito on Tuesday at 3 pm and I flew out at 8pm.  Before leaving to Europe, I packed a second bag. My co-chaperone took my Europe bag home with her and my co-Uruguay traveller brought my Uruguay bag with her to the Airport.

One of the most important things with so much back to back travel is a shower. The flight between Paris and Quito was 14 hours and the flight to Montevideo was 8.  After checking back in and passing through customs, we purchased entrance to the VIP lounge. I was able to shower and change and then Greta and I were able to toast our trip with sparkling wine and a snack.

We arrived in Montevideo in the Early morning and had to wait a few hours to check into our AirBnB. After February in Paris and the…
